The Mountain cities
The province of Ragusa is bounded by the Iblean Mountains, evocative mountain chains that reach their highest point with Lauro Mount (m.985).
The Iblean Mountains are made of lavastones and the typical local limestone where the erosion of water has created tight and deep gorges, the so called "cave" or "canyons". That's why they are a particularly amazing and interesting destination for the ones who love trekking or mountain bike excursions.
The cities, notably those in the mountainside ( Buscemi, Buccheri, Chiaramonte Gulfi, Monterosso Almo, Giarratana), outspread like tiny creches amid woods and slopes, have retained their agricultural traditions, offering the opportunity of reinvigorating natural trails among the dry-stone walls commonly used to mark the fields' boundries and the secular carob-trees.
Chiaramonte Gulfi, in particular, apart from its pine forest and amazing panoramic location offers Art, Culture, History and Tradition to the visitors. The site adds to the value of its landscape an extremely interesting itinerary, including museums, art-food and wine routes, cultural and leisure events.
The tradition has been transposed by the citizens o Chiaramonte in eight museums that you can't miss: the Museum of Oil, the Ornithologic Museum, the Museum of Liberty Style Art, the Museum of Ethnic-Musical Instruments , the Museum of Historic-Military Relics, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Museum of Sicilian Hand Embroidery, the "De Vita" Picture Gallery.
If you need a restorative break then, the best thing to do is to stop and taste the several typical products that this land offers: the delicious pork meat recipes, the oil made from the strong Iblei olives, the wines produced from the vineyards on the plateaus, the "Caciocavallo" cheese, the delicate honey of Ragusa, etc.
All these flavours will impress upon your memories, giving to your holiday an unique and unforgettable "taste"!
