King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III
comes to the station
Since its foundation, the Hotel "Antica Stazione" has honoured the memory and the tradition of the railway station in Chiaramonte. At the beginning of the thirties on the Arcibessi Mount there was the ancient town railway station; on the railroad passed a very slow steam locomotive typical of that period whose nickname was "Treno di Ciccio Pecora". This train was the only "fast" means of transportation for people living in the country of the Chiaramonte area, like students, teachers and farmers. The train became famous and is always mentioned in stories and legends concerning the old railway station in the island. The locomotive could not carry the weight of its passengers, especially in steep slopes, those times they used to get down to lighten the train so that it could reach its destination at a normal speed. The train stopped in Siracusa, Buccheri, Palazzolo and other localities in the Valley of Noto.
According to tradition the train took its name from the owner of a shop, the trader Ciccio Pecora, who sold in Ragusa toy models of cars and trains. But others say that Ciccio Pecora was a shepherd who pastured the flock near the railroad and its sheeps often occupied the tracks stopping trains.
